Alternative Fibres
The use of man-made fibres has dramatically increased in the last fifty years, from almost nothing to over 14 million tonnes annually. The problem, of course, is that every bit of it is majorly processed using nasty chemicals to turn them into fibre.
If you think cotton is any greener think again. Conventional cotton farming consumes a quarter of the world's chemical pesticides and fertilizers and guzzles a vast amount of precious water.
That's why we support the use of alternative fibres including hemp, bamboo*, silk, flax, nettle - all good, natural fibres that can reduce the fashion industry's reliance on chemicals.
* We just want to make a note on bamboo, as the process used for turning bamboo into fabric is the same as that used for turning wood pulp into viscose. However, bamboo is an incredibly fast growing crop, so it's believed to be more sustainable. We're working with all our brands that use bamboo to get a better understanding of the environmental impact of the processing.
